Major Awards

Wates Community Week is an annual event that gives Wates people the opportunity to support a local cause. In 2016, over 1,000 people took part supporting 68 local projects across the UK.

Wates Giving aims to support young people from disadvantaged families by providing access to university training through bursaries. The most recent award is to the University of Westminster’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Partnering with The Prince’s Trust

Major Awards

Wates Giving has been supporting the Prince’s Trust since 2008 by making an annual award to the Built Environment Leadership Group. The Group, chaired by James Wates, helps disadvantaged young people access job opportunities in the sector through delivering the “Get into Construction” programme.

Relief for flood victims

Family Awards

Woodhead Mountain Rescue was heavily involved in helping both York and Manchester when they were hit by flooding. Wates Giving provided a grant towards the purchase of specialist water rescue equipment and also gave a grant to support The York Flood Disaster Fund.

Learning about sustainability

Major Awards

Wates Giving continues to support the Supply Chain Sustainability School in delivering training in key sustainability topics. The school now has over 40 partners involved and over 200 supply chain businesses have attended workshops.

SES’s annual Hovercraft Day saw 80 schoolgirls work together to design, build and race their own hovercrafts. Hosted by York’s Mount School and funded by Wates Giving, the day aimed to boost enthusiasm for science, maths and creative engineering.

Bringing HOME work opportunities

Major Awards

HOME opened in Manchester in 2015 helping unemployed young people gain work placements through a volunteer and work-based training programme backed by Wates Giving. HOME hopes to grow its apprenticeship provision over the next few years with a focus on creating opportunities for young people to gain vital experience in the creative sector.

New home for Young Epilepsy

Family Awards

The charity Young Epilepsy is building a new school and resource centre in Surrey with the help of a grant from Wates Giving, put forward by Andrew Wates. The school will provide care for more than 200 children who suffer from complex epileptic conditions.

Employee Sponsored Awards

We offer Match Funding and have a Give As You Earn scheme. We award Community Grants in support of the organisations Wates people volunteer regularly with and provide sports sponsorship for employees, or their direct family members, who compete at a national level.

Family Awards

A number of other awards are made throughout the year. These are proposed by members of the Wates family for causes they personally support.
